MOVABLE SCHOOLS.

PURPOSES TO WHICH THEY MIGHT BE PUT.

In a letter received by the Wellington Education Board the Education Department stated that it had designed “movable and extensible” school buildings constructed in sections. These buildings were intended to be used for the following purposes: (1) To follow railway or other public works construction; (2) to provide accommodation in rural districts where the ultimate centrality of the school population was for the time doubtful ! (3) to provide auxiliary accommodation where the permanency of an increase in attendance was not assured ; (4) to relieve pressure on accommodation pending the erection of permanent additions; (5) to provide accommodation while funds for permanent buildings could npt be obtained. “The Department hopes,” the letter stated, “that education boards will take into consideration the question of erecting movable buildings where accommodation is urgently required, and particularly where a permanent building or the subsidiary work would be very costly.’ Mr J. J. Clark said he had seen a suggestion in the Press that the Minister thought these buildings could .be utilised at Mount Cook, Newtown, and other such places. He really could not take the statement seriously.

The chairman (Mr T. Forsyth) : I certainly don’t think the Minister would suggest such a thing as that; I hope not, anyhow.
