WARDEN’S COURT.

MINING CONTRIBUTIONS.

UNDER FINANCE ACT.

TOTAL OF £150,000.

THE “RISING SUN” MINE.

Mr E. G. .Banks, superintendent of the Waihi Goldmining Company Ltd., attended the Paeroa Warden’s Court to-day, on behalf of his own and other companies, in reference to the companies’ contribution towards the Rivers Improvement Scheme, under the Finance Act. Mr Banks said the companies wanted to know how their assessment was made up ; the sum for last year was £966 14s Bd. Was this based on the £150,000, or the £lBO,000 ? Mr Banks said his reason for asking the question was that the Waihi Borough Council, which was a contributory, had recently been assessed at a higher figure than its proportion of £150,000. The Council bad pointed this out to the Treasury, and it was then admitted that a mistake had been made. He wanted to make sure that the Treasury was npt making the sanie mistake in regard to the mining companies’ liability. Furthermore, the. Rising Sun mine was discharging crushings, tailings, and ajiso mullock into the river, and if the returns for this mine had not been put in it would affect the other companies to some extent. Mr Banks also wanted to know what the levy w,as on tonnage and gold output, respectively, and particularly as to whether the companies were being charged on a greater capital outlay than £150,000. The chairman, Mr J. Salmon, S.M., said the Rising Sun Company had been asked. to furnish a return, and a further letter would be sent. The total liability on which the assessment was payable was £150,000. He would give a decision in respect to •the assessment of £966 14s Bd. after inquiring into the output of the Rising Sun mine. The decision would be given at Waihi.
