DISTRICT NEWS.
(“Gazette” Staff Reporter.) TURUA. THE ROADS COMMITTEE. The recently elected roads committee, Messrs J. C. Miller (chairman) and W. G. Hayward, of the Hauraki Plains County Council, and Messrs D. G, McMillan and B R. Henry, of the Turua Riding, left at the end of last week for Taranaki, whither they have gone to inspect the roads and o gather information for a- proposed permanent roading scheme' for th? Turua Riding. I.t is understood that a special loan is to be raised for this purpose if the committee’s report: is favourable and i£ adopted' by the ratepayers. SPORTS CLUB’S DANCE.
The most successful of the ordinary monthly dances yet held by the Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Club took place last Thursday evening, when the takings were a record. Over 50 couples were present. Mr J. Schmidt ably officiated as M.C, and good music was rendered by Mr J. Tredaway. Several extras were given by .local artists. These dances are well conducted, and are proving very popular with all in the district. THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The following balance-sheet has been prepared for. the public library by Mr Gibson :
Expenditure.—Stationery 10s, printing £1 17s 6d, lighting £1 Bs, salary £26. new books £3O 4s lid, new door £7 *ss 6d, sundries 10s, concert expenses £5 2s 6d, totalling £123 2s 7d. Receipts.—Cash in bank £29 15s 6d, subscriptions £26 9s, donations £6l 18s Id, rent £5. Leaving a credit balance of £5O 4s 2d.
NGATEA. ADDITIONS TO HALL. I.t is understood that the Ngatea people are desirous of enlarging their hall, and to further that project there is every possibility of a loan of something like £6OO or £BOO being raised. The Nagtea butter factory employees are also helping in the financial part, and are holding a dance at the hall next Thursday. ODDFELLOWS BRANCH. It is possible tha.t a branch of the Oddfellows Lodge will be formed at Ngatea, and efforts are being made by several interested persons there. A number have already expressed their willingness to join the lodge should a branch be formed. The promoter is confident of gaining sufficient to commence operations. As Mr D. Vincent has all information regarding this matter, those interested should communicate with him.. CALFSKINS. Mr J. H. Nicholson, representing the New Zealand Co-op. Bacon Company, took away a large number of calf skins last Friday. The number included 60 supplied by one man. WAITAKARURU. STOCK SALE. At the Waitakaruru sale on Friday the prices, with the exception of tlipse for beef, were somewhat similar to .those realised a 1 the recent Ngatea sale. Very little beef was yarded, and very little demand, the prices being far below the value of stock offered.
