EFFECT OF DROUGHT.
VALLEY AND PLAINS.
THE OUTLOOK SERIOUS.
With a view to ascertaining as nearly as possible the effect of the drought in this district, a representative of the “Gazette” interviewed Mr A. J. Garry, manager of the Paeroa factory of th.e New Zealand Co-opera-tive Dairy Co., Ltd. Mr Garry said it was quite impossible .to make an informing comparison between the supply at present and that for ,the corresponding period of last The figures were about equal, but as the cows .were still coming in there was np steady supply standard to judge by ; a good rain now, however, would mean an increase of from 30 to 40 per cent., and had the season been favourable throughout the increase would be nearer 50 per cent. The outlook was certainly serious for-the dairy farmers, and for the Dominion as a whole, seeing that dairy produce was the mainstay, wool and meat being very doubtful. The farmers in the Paeroa district, Mr Garry added, were to be congratulated upon the quality of the cream being supplied, which was a credit to them.
