“Taking a general view of .the situation, we see that i>t has only been within the past century or so* that dental decay has grown’ to assume the present' alarming proportions,” state._Drs. E. H. Wilkins and T. A. Hunter in the current “New Zealand'* Health Journal.” • “Dental disease, broadly speaking, is a modern disease. Side by side , with its increase we find a rapid /development of refining, preserving, and ariificialising processes as applied to foodstuffs. , Furthermore, it is only in those countries where these artificial and refining processes have been extensively adopted that dental disease has become widespread. Dental disease is to be found in' each country in corresponding proportion to the extent, of the use of refined food. In individual families in this Dominion where the diatetic principles calculated to prevent dental disease have been put into practice, the results have been most striking. The existence here and there of cases amongst children with marked freedom from dental caries (respite dietetic habits' known to contribute <o the production of such does not necessarily disprove the general contention that modern developments in diet are the cause, of dental disease.”
