HAURAKI PLAINS AREA SOUGHT.

A number pf sections were allotted to returned soldiers by ballot last week. The ballot, conducted by the North Auckland Land Board, was for the subdivided Motutara Estate of 2562 acres at Muriwai, which was purchased by the Government frpm Sir Edwin Mitchelson at £l2 an acre. It has been divided into 13 sections, varying in size from 88 to 351 acres, at annual, charges ranging 'from £B5 to £lB9. The total number of applicants was 13, and the total number of sections applied for 12. Aftei* the examination of the applicants only eight sections were allotted, the following being'the successful : No. 1, F. J. Greenaway, Martinboro ; 3, T. W. Willett, Taihape ; 4, D. S. •Willetts, Taumarunui; 5, G. Blythe, Ponsonby ; 6, W. Davies, Mercer ; 8, H. B. Stevens, Kaukapakapa; 9, J. Greenaway, Martinboro; 10, C. D. Tod, Devonport.There was much keener demand for two of the four isolated sections in the Auckland Land District,, which were disposed of by. the board pf that area. For an area of 122 acres of drained swamp in the Waihou survey -district, on the Hauraki Plains, the capital 'value being £lB4O, and the half-yearly rent £46, there were 29 applicants, J. Adamson, of Stratford, being successful. Fifteen applications were received for another drain-, ed swamp section near Thames, Tallied at £7OO, J. Maxwell, of Owhango, drawing the winning marble. A 500acre block of second-class country in bush in the Hapuakohe district, was secured by A. E. Cowley, of Otane, out of four applicants, and another sec■tion of 268 acres .of similar country near Katikati went to S, P. Good, of Ngaruawahia, there - being two applicants. This ballot indicates a sjtrong preference for the rich drained swamp land of the Hauraki Plains?--
