WANDERING CATTLE.

Sir, —It is a pity that your correspondent who signs himself "Interested” is not able to take a more disinterested view of my suggestion re fencing in .those portions of private and public-property which the Beautifying Society is trying to improve. If he is observing he will notice a considerable length of rustic fencing. in Albert Park, Auckland, designed for the purpose of protecting .the public property from the public. I contend that the same protection is needed imPaeroa* I know, also that there is nothing so annoying to a cattle drover as unfenced sections and open gateways. This portion of the community is as much entitled to consideration as are other citizens. To malign them because of damage done to unfenced ground will not conduce to social Harmony or induce people to market cattle in Paeroa, My suggestion was made “Pro bpuo publico,” and I am replying to "Interested’s’’ second letter with the same object. I maintain that we canppt allow any body of horticultural .enthusiasts to dp .as ■they like even though they think they are the most competent judges of what is beautiful. Expediency must be taken into our civic calculations. ’With regard to my .condonation (?) of so-called offences, I would point out that some well-mean-ing folk may after all be only “blini guides, binding burdens on men’s shoulders 'grievous to be born” and •that many so-called laws are laws merely through the .apathy of citi-~ zens. I am prepared to contribute towards purchasing a coil of wirenetting, but I object to spending time and money in harassing unintentional transgressors, whose animals should never have been "led into temptation.” ? 53. N. DAVIES.
