THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 1921. DOMAIN IMPROVEMENTS.

The Paeroa Rugby Union, in a letter wnicn came before the Domain Board (Borough, (Jounca members) last evening, askei me Board to call a conference oi various bodies, including tile HauraKi a., and P. Association, the Cricket Club, and the Paeroa Beautifying Society, to devise ways and means of improving the Domain. The request met with the reception it deserved — a favourable one —and the Board decided to arrange a conference. Paeroa is at a disadvantage in respect to indoor entertainments, and will in all probability remain so until a municipal town hall is built, for very few first-class companies ever visit the town — the “Vice-Regals” is an exception to the rule. It is, therefore, all the more desirable that what facilities the place has for outdoor recreation should be made the most of.

The Paeroa Rugby Union is far-seeing enough to realise that on account of its geographical position as a centre Paeroa must always be a suitable place for representative matches, and the Union has a laudable desire to remove the one handicap, the bad state of the playing fields. The matter is of interest ani value to the whole community, as the Domain is used for so many purposes, including the Hauraki A. and P. Association’s Show, which, by the way, will be a two-day fixture this year. An interesting intentional omission in the letter referred to is that the question of finance was merely alluded to indirectly. It is understood that there is a proposal mooted for the raising of money by debentures, which project, in view of the state of public finance, is a very desirable' one. At the present time it is useless approaching either the Government or local bodies for financial assistance for any but desperately urgent works, and communities must be self-reliant and finance whatever schemes they have in view,? otherwise nothing will be achieved. So far so good. The development of the present plans will be watched with interest; it is reasonable to expect that generous private financial aid will be forthcoming.
