WANDERING CATTLE.

—,— i Sir, —Your conversation wicn the. police, as reported in your local columns, in reference to the action of the Beautifying Society over some wandering cattle seems to bring that body face to face with a crisis in itslaudable and promising operations. The position is, I take iu that owing to the lack of fencing around the church corner the law as to damage, or trespass cannot be appealed to. On the other hand, the police seem to think it questionable whether the corner is a public place within the meaning of the law, so that possibly no action could be taken under the iaw pertaining '.to .wandering cattle. It follows, then, that there is no redress, but that any of those unprincipled people who allow wandering cattle at night c,an turn their beasts on to eithei' the church or the railway reserve with no fear of any pe ialty. I believe that an amount ef £4OO is to be spent on the railway reserve in beautifying on rock garden lines. If the above argument holds good, it seems very apparent that this will be 400 beautiful spve.eig.'.s wasted. Possibly the members oi the society are earning so much that they are indifferent ;to this ; on the other hand, it seems fairly apparen.: that the Society must go out of business. Poor Paeroa.
