TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The agitation for a high school for Huntly will I hope, be taken up seriously and effectively. The number of children already going from Huntly to Hamilton is conclusive evidence that this district can provide an attendance sufficient to justify the local establishment of secondary education. As it is, the children who do go to Hamilton from Huntly are penalized by having to rise at 5 p.m. every school day, summer and winter alike and not able to get back to their homes before 6.30 p.m. and sometimes an hour later. After their evening meal, they have their home lessons which take on an average some two hours to complete. They are fortunate if they get to bed by 9 p.m. Throughout the whole of that 16 hours they have no time for rest, so that either their strength is being taxed too severely or else our talk about an eight hours working day for a grown man, is idle and foolish. Considering the severity of the ordeal, it is suprising to find that nearly twenty children are undergoing it. Surely there must be many who reasonably decline it. Probably an attendance of thirty would be reached if we had a high school in our midst, and the difficulties in the way are by no means great. I am etc., Parent.
