THE HUNTLY PRESS. PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT 1 P.M. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1916. The Grand Duke Nicholas.

No one seems to have remarked that the brilliant capture of Erzeroum was carried out under the direction of the man who was virtually turned down last year for want of success in stemming the German invasion. At the time of his transfer, the newspapers noted the event as a kind of punishment for incapacity in his leading of the Russian forces, forgetting altogether his brilliant successes in his early campaigns and the great difficulties under which his retreat was carried out. Whatever may be his abilities in retreat, it is most evident that the Grand Duke Nicholas is a king of strategists in attack, and it is doubtful if any general has shown so great ability in this direction in the war. It would seem to have been a dispensation of Providence that the Grand Duke was transferred to the southern command, for the Russian retreat in the north had virtually been stayed before his transfer, and he was evidently the right man to strike a decisive blow at the Turks in Armenia, where victory was likely to have such farreaching effects.
