Bowling.

The first match promoted by the Huntly Bowling and Croquet Club was commenced on Christmas Day, for a ham kindly donated by Mr T. Black. The ground, owing to the very dry weather, was not in as good order as could be wished, but yet played fairly well. The players, also, perhaps owing to the too zealous celebration of the festivities connected with the day, were not up to their usual form, and the play, except in a few instances, was not brilliant. In the first match played between Messrs J. Harlock and J. P. Bailey (skip), and T. Britton and Dr MoDiarmid (skip), the best contest took place. At no period of the game were the two sides far apart as regards the score, and several quite exciting heads were played. Towards the finish, the excitement became intense and right up to the last head it was anybody’s game, Messrs Harlock and Bailey eventually winning by 21 to 20. The second game was played between Messrs C. Bailey and Turton (skip), and Eccles and Mathews (skip). This resulted in rather a hollow victory for Messrs C. Bailey and Turton, by 24 to 15. Messrs Eccles and Mathews playing with very hard luck throughout. In the third game, the winners of the first match were pitted against Messrs E. W. Ruston and Harris (skip), and after suffering reverses in the first five heads, asserted their superiority, and eventually ran out easy winners by 24 to 16. Other games will be played as occasion serves, and now that the holidays are over, the match should soon be decided.. To overcome the burning up of the grass by the hot summer sun, the club is installing a watering outfit, consisting of an oil-engine and pump with a generous length of rubber hosepipe to enable the green to be thorougly soaked at proper intervals. The grass on the croquet lawn i« coming on slowly, and when the water is available, should rcome on sufficiently fast to enable the green to be used next month.
