Hunty Road Board
The usual monthly meeting of the Huntly Road Board was held a week early this month, in consequence of the fourth Saturday falling on ’Xmas Day. The following were present:— Messrs J. P. Bailey (Chairman) R. T. Hill, W. D. Thompson, W. F. Parker and L. B. Harris Jr. SALE OF CLOSED ROAD AND SEVERANCE AT MATAHURU. | On the motion of Mr Bailey,! seconded by Mr R. T. Hill, it was decided to accede to the request of Mr E. L. Tucker to sell to him at the valuation, the closed road and severance adjourning his property at Matahuru. OR INI —TE HOE ROAD. Several letters having reference to the proposed connecting road between Orini and Te Hoe, were received from T. W. Rhodes Esq. M.P., Mr G. Me Adam and the District Engineer of Public Works. A deputation consisting of Messrs Phair Sedgwick and Duck also waited on the Board re the same matter. The chairman explained that, although the District Engineer had inspected the road some two months ago, he had not yet forwarded his report, so the Board had not yet come to a decision in the matter. He promised to urge the District Engineer to expedite his report so that the route might be fixed and the settlers be placed in a position to fence. EXPENDITURE OF GRANTS. Letters were read from the District Engineer and the Under Secretary of Public works explaining that none but the most urgent grants would oe expended this year, and also, that to enable the Department to keep its men in employ such work as they had to do, would be done by its own men. Local Bodies are therefore informed that to ask for expenditure of grants would be practically waste of time, ACCESS TO SECTIONS 229—232. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking what the Board was prepared to do to give access to the above sections, and pointing out that the opening up of the road to Te Hoe would be of great value to many settlers out hack. Decided to reply that a considerable sum of money had already been expended in forming the road from the said sections to a point whe're it was necessary to deviate the road. Also to point out that the Board had made a proposal to the Commissioner about, two years ago with regard to this deviation but that no reply had been vouchsafed. When the Commissioner’s reply was forthcoming, the Board would again consider the matter. MATAHURU—TAUPIRI ROAD. In reply to a request of the Board’s, that the grant of £IOO be immediately expended, the District Engineer wrote making various observations on drainage in general and the road drains on this road in particular. Reply considered unsatisfactory and the Clerk was instructed to write pointing out that the drainage was a matter of secondary consideration, the main point being that two settlers had to carry their cream on their backs across this swamp to the Main Road, and that the judicious expenditure of the Grant would obviate this. It was decided to form the road along the Mangapiko Flat. Accounts amounting to £35-ls-Ud were passed for payment.
