THE HUNTLY PRESS. PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT 1 P.M. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1915. The Year.

AS this will be our last issue of the year, we take this opportunity of making a short review of the comparative position locally. On looking back over the year, one is struck with the fact that no outstanding event will mark the year 1915, but rather, that it has been a year of quiet progress. After making a bad start, following on the disaster of last year, the mines have gradually increaseP their output, till they are now well on the way towards reaching the old level.

Perhaps the greatest event of the year was the opening of the Pukemiro Railway, and the putting on the market of Pukemiro coal. As it will be some time before the mine is fully opened up, the output is not yet large, but that will be remedied as time goes on. Business in Huntly has kept pace with the other industrial activities, and has gradually improved as the the year has grown older. The ’Xmas trade has been exceptionally brisk, the business on some of the early days of the week being nearly up to Christmas Eve business of former years. During the year, a number of our young men have left to serve their king and country in the various theatres of war, and we are glad to know that whereever they go, they earn the highest praise for bravery and efficiency. Unfortunately many of them have been wounded, and several have made the supreme sacrifice, but this is the fortune of war, and what each expected when he left.

The outlook for the coming year, while not extremely brilliant, yet promises steady improvement, and we may confidently look forward to another progressive year, provided nothing occurs to upset calculations.
