Life-saving Waistcoat.
Messrs Riordan and Co., Government contractors, Lawrence Lane, London, E. C., have been awarded the gold medal for their life-saving waistcoat at the Pacific Panama International Exhibition at San Franscisco. Captain Griffiths, of the Board of Trade, visited the Aldgate Baths to witness demonstrations with Riordan’ life-saving waistcoat, which, is claimed to be of greater value in saving life at sea, as well as in the prevention of seasickness. Tha vest, which is worn in the same way as an ordinary garment, is padded with Java kapok, a natural vegetable wool, which is five times lighter than cork, and is so charged wno vegetable oil that it will not absorb the water under thirty hours. Several tests were applied to illustrate the buoyancy and the utility of the waistcoat, and it value as a protector against cold to passengers on deck or in boats on the open sea.
