Correspondence

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Would you kindly permit me to state that a paragraph which appeared in the “ Herald ” the other day stating that cooking is to be taught in ths country schools has caused wide spread disgust and ridicule. Just fancy, sir, in the face of German science robbing us of trade and shaking the foundations of nearly every great nation in the world includour own, we reply by teaching the people to make stew. If we look at the fact that the students from the country schools who will soon take over their parents farms which are thejmain sources of wealth and the prosperity of this country will require a knowledge of those branches of science dealing with animal and plant life and diseases, to say nothing of machinery and the chemistry of soils and fertilizers, it is hard to see where the stew making comes in. A farmer’s wife should be his help mate and very often is the main stay in making the farm a success, and should be able to keep all the accounts and watch over the whole of the farm when the husband is away or sick. But if any improvement is to be made or we are to keep pace in the march of nations there is no time for cooking stews in our schools. Yours faithfullv, C. WESLEY, Swanson.
