Kimihia Carnival.
The Soldiers’ Queen Carnival held at Kimihia has now come to an end with the gratifying result of added to the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. The principal event of the Carnival was a Bazaar held in the school on Saturday 13th November for which the people of Kimihia worked hard and provided a great quantity of Fancy goods, needlework, farm and vegetable produce, fruit, confectionery and live stock. The school was prettily decorated with Tree ferns and other greenery and looked very attractive with the boautiful pictures, mirrors, cushions, fancy articles, toys, musical instruments vases, etc set out for sale on the stalls. Sweets, confectionery, fruit and vegetables were also laid out on daintily decorated stalls to attract the eyes of those who delight in feasting. On one of the stalls was noticed a fac-simile of the famous ‘ Coronation Chair ’ of Westminster Abbey, carved in wood to scale, 1 inch to a foot, and containing a real stone to represent the famous stone of the coronation chair which legend states to be the ‘ Jacob’s pillow ’ carried from Palestine to Ireland, thence to Scone and finally to Westminster Abbey. Various competitions were entered into with zest and provided amusement for the visitors as well as giving them the opportunity of winning unique prizes, one of which was a circular green velvet jewel casket with white velvet cover penpainted in green, and lined witli old gold. The beautiful Bride doll ‘ Elaine ’ dressed by Miss Holland realised £3 15s while two other Bride dolls added charm to the collection of dolls, which included a Russian soldier, a New Zealand soldier, a Jack Tar, a Soldiers’ Queen, a Japanese and numerous others.
The collection of pictures supplied by Messrs Hill and Plummor of Auckland included exquisitely framed copies of
such old favourites as ‘Cupid asleep ’ and ‘ Cupid awake, ‘ The Reaper ’ and others of equal fame. The live stock of which were a pig, ducks, fowls, pigeons etc fetched a good price. In the Shelter shed, which was decorated as a temporary Tea Kiosk, sandwiches, cakes and other refreshments were provided but ‘ Tea ’ was charged for at the usual rates.
