Why the French are Advancing.
NEW AND POWERFUL WEAPON IN USE
Speaking at the Eight-hour banquet at the Trades Hall, Sydney, recently, M. Chayet, Consul-General for France, made an interesting statement regarding France’s determination to adopt some means that would end the war quickly, while making it less sanguinary. He said that all that was required now was unity among the peoples of the Allied nations and continued : “We will do our utmost to shorten this dreadful war, and make it less sanguinary. While I have no official information to impart to you, I may say that I have learned by private letter that for some weeks —only a few weeks —the French army is in possession of a very powerful weapon.
“ Our advance must in a measure, be attributed to the use of this new weapon. I hope that it will be a very important factor in making the war shorter At the same time I am sure that you will neglect nothing to aid your Government and the British Empire to which you belong to bring the end near, so that in the beautiful words of your song ‘‘Rule Brittannia’* you never will be slaves. '• (cheers).
