AUCKLAND NATIVES V. LOWER WAIKATO.
The above match (under Northern Union rules) was played on the recreation ground before a moderate crowd of spectators on Saturday last. The Natives who won the toss, had matters pretty well their own way during the initial part of the game and should have scored on two occasions. At the end of half an hour’s play the visitor’s full back fumbled the ball badly and Morris had no difficulty in opening up the score for the home team. Bookham failing with the kick. Shortly after, Wilson further increased the lead, Littlewood failing to convert. Half time arrived shortly with the score Waikato 6 Natives 0 After the spell, the game was very evenly contested, but had not been long in progress before Bookham got over the line, Peckham converting. Shortly after this, the visitors made a determined rush which ended in Rukutai scoring a well earned try, this player was unlucky in not scoring again. The homesters then placed the issue beyond doubt, Mason and Peckham scoring successive tries which were both converted by Morris and Peckham respectively. The game ending in Waikato’s favour by 21 points to 3, a score which did not indicate the relative merit of the teams. For the winners Peckham, Raynor and Bookham played their usual good game, Rukutai and Asher being the most conspicuous for the losers. Mr W. Parker had control of the game.
