Bennett’s Maori Opera Company.

The Maori Opera Co. made their initial bow to a Huntly audience at the Miners’ Hal! last Monday, the theatre being well filled with an enthusiastic audience. The story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai is well known to people of New Zealand and was faithfully portrayed by this clever company of native performers. As Tutanekai, Hinemoa’s handsome lover, Mr Rogers was a huge success and his rich tenor voice was heard to great, advantage in the solo work. Miss Tirita Butt, who played Hinemoa is only 15 years of age and possesses a wonderful soprano voice which she used to great advantage. The other characters were all portrayed and mention must be specially made of Miss Mere Amoliau, a winsome little lass in the part of Tupa. Her work with Tiki (Mr T. Mahima) is remarkably clever and she possesses a mezzo voice that is natural and The opera which was who acts as conductor is a fine musical festival worthy of the highest p a. e. The pci dances and the hakas which were also introduced were a strong feature and much appreciated.
