Accidents.
A very painful accident occurred to a miner named Alfred Lloyd on Tuesday last. It appears that at about 2 p.m., Lloyd, with his mate, was engaged in taking down coal, when a large piece broke unexpectedly away, and before he had time to jump clear, the coal caught him, knocked him down and rolled over the lower part of his body. On examination by Dr McDairmid, who was soon in attendance, it was found that the unfortunate man had sustained most severe injuries, consisting of a fracture of both thighs, a fractured pelvL, an injury to the bladder and to the right shoulder and a general very severe shock. All possible attention was given to the injured man, until the arrival of the night train, by which he was removed to the Hamilton Hospital. . On reaching the Hospital, it was soon seen that there wa s only a slender hope of recovery and the patient gradually sank till midday of Wednesday, when he passed away. An inquest was opened at Hamilton, and is being continued to-day. Lloyd was a married man thirty-seven years of age, and leaves a wife and family.
