Returned Troopers.
Concerning the position of those men who are returned from the fornt invalided or wounded, and who are eventually restored to sound health, the Defence authorities state that such men will not be given the option of obtaining their discharges, but will be drafted into reinforcements to go forward. There are cases that may warrant the authorities in giving discharges, but generally speaking the man who has looked after himself and is quite sound will still be regarded as belonging to His Majesty’s forces, and liable for service. The question was put to the authorities in order to clear up any possible misunderstandings regarding the liability for service of those who are returned to New Zealand, and subsequently become “ medically fit and well ” in the military sense of the term. The impression may have gained ground among the relatives of such men that the fact that these men had “ answered the call,” and have been wounded would relieve them of any further service, but it must be borne in mind that all men on enlisting sign on for the term of the war, and as a good deal of money is expended in trainiug them as soldiers, any mishap that may occur, and from which they subsequently recover, in no manner reloases them front their military responsibilities. Among those shortly returning to Nevv Zealand are a number of men who will obtain their discharges owing to the circumstances under which they are being invalided home. - Waipa Post.
