Episcopal Visit.
Or. Tuesday last Huntly received a visit from the Bishop of Auckland (Dr. A. W. Averill). Arriving by the Rotorua Express, the Bishop spent the afternoon with the Vicar of the Parish, afterwards proceeding to Rakaumanga, where the schoolroom was well-filled with the Maoris, who had gathered to the service.
The Bishop addressed the Maoris in English, the sermon being afterwards interpreted by the Rev. J. T. McWilliam, Assistant Superintendent of the Maori Mission. In the evhning a service was held at St. Paul’s, and was very well attended. The Vicar (Rev. J. L. A. Kayll), conducted the, service, the Rev. J. T. McWilliam read the lesson, and the Bishop preached an eloquent sermon from the text “ My Fresh Springs Shall be in Thee.”
During the service the Bishop presented to Mr B. C. Housley his license as.a La.yreader. After the service the Bi-hop met the members of the local
“ Church of England Men’s Society ” at the Vicarage, and in the course of a short address encouraged the men to go on in the work of upbuilding the work of the Church in the Parish. On Wednesday the Bishop proceeded to Waingaro, were he confirmed several Maori candidates.
The Bishop’s tour on this occasion will be short in point of time, as he stays only a fortnight in the Waikato, J>ut during that time he intends to cover a great deal of ground The Bishop has expressed his intention of making, a special visit to Huntly again in a few months and spending a Sunday here. He particularly wishes to meet the men at their afternoon service.
