Another German Trick.

North-east of Libons there is a hill which constitutes one of the strongest advanced points of the Allied line in the West, commanding the town of Chaulnes and the road to Peronne. From this hill it has been observed that each time the French batteries show signs of beginning a bombardment the Germans drive out the civilian inhabitants —men, women, and children —into the streets and open places where they must suffer under shell fire, while the Germans themselves lurk in cover. This ruse has been more or less successful, Chaulnes having .escaped the pounding it might otherwise have received, seeing how completely it is commanded by French batteries. The Germans in the trenches round the town are very deeply dug in, and compel the women of the town to undertake the dangerous work of carrying out suppli -s. Many women have been killed in this way.
