On Sunday week, June 20th. there will be a service for men held in St Paul’s Church at 3 p.m. Tenders for the cleaning and caretaking of the Huntly School will be received by the chairman or secretary on or before noon on Friday 18th June.

On Saturday, June 19th, an excursion train to Rotorua will leave Auckland, and intermediate stations.

On Sunday Evening next in the Methodist Church the Rev. W. A. Watson will commence a series of addresses on the relationship of Christianity to the social crisis.

A social will be held in the Miners’ Hall on Wednesday evening next, 16th inst., inaugurated by the members of the Ladies Guild ofSt. Paul’s Church. The Town Board is losing no time in getting the work of staiting the Electric Lighting Scheme. Mr Fenn, the consulting Engineer will be in Huntly on Monday and Tuesday next and will wait on the Board at a Special Meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the preliminaries.

There can be no doubt that Huntly people love a dance. It matters not how many are held, or how frequently they come along, they are all well patronised, and] strangely enough the same people are to be seen at each social. We wonder whether Huntly is unique in this respect, or is it characteristic of all country towns.

Several of the farmers in the Matahuru —Taniwha district are giving up milking and are going in for sheep. Apparently, the reason in each case is, that the extra profits derived from dairying are not commensurate with the work and lack of freedom connected with it. Already Messrs Tucker Bros, have sold their herd and sales are advertised by Messrs. Rose Bros, and Richard Storey.

The carting of the metal to close up the gap between the Town Board boundary' and the Taupiri Gorge was commenced on Monday last. The carters made a very determined start and given good weather the work should be completed in a few weeks. When this work is finished, the reproaches of the motorists, which have been loud with regard to the roads outside Huntly, should be diminished somewhat.

The Town and Country Journal states that a remarkable case of a sheep whose teeth were covered with a thin coating of gold is reported from Swan Hill, Victoria. It is stated that Joseph Obree, butcher, purchased a few sheep recently from R. and W. Jones, farmers, of Murray Flats, Tyntynder South. A head of one was subsequently purchased by' Mr John Macpherson, motor garage proprietor, of Swan Hill. He discovered the gold tyetli at the dinner-table.

The subdivision of counties seems to have taken hold of people in this part of the world. A Bill has already been advertised providing for the divison of the Raglan County, and we are informed that frequent meetings are being held by those who are desirous of dividing the Waikato County. In each case it is the larger and poorer end of the county which desires to break away, and in at least one case, the proposed boundaries of the new Countv have been very carelessly struck out.

The Directors of the Huntly Brick and Fire Clay Co. Ltd are to be congratulated on the very successful result of the past years working. Despite the dislocation of trade consequent on the War, trade kept up in a wonderful manner, and the Directors are able to declare a dividend of 6 per cent and to carry forward a substantial amount for next year. This speaks well for the quality of the product of the Brick Wo ks due iargely to the knowledge and resource of the manager, Mr 11. Greenwell.

There is one respect in which Huntlv is sadly lacking as regards Winter amusements, that is, in the provision of anything approaching a good concert. Surely in a town as large as this, there are enough good vocalists to provide a ploasant, evening’s amusement, and we all know, there are plenty of good objects for which vocalists can use their voices. Time was when local concerts were frequent, popular and good, but the time has vanished, and it seems very long since we had the pleasure of reporting one. With so many talented instrumen talists in the place, and those so much appreciated, it seems strange that the other branch of music is not better represented. The instrumentalists have shown that they have considerable go in them. Perhaps they could stir up th fir friends whose voices are above the average.
