Belgium Week
Belgian Week in Huntly must be pronounced a complete success.
Everything organised in connection therewith went with a swing and without a hitch. The ladies who did the work are to be congratulated on the signal success that attended their efforts, which success was directly due to the really hard work they put in. The work of collecting and selling badges went on merrily all the week, a very large sum being raised. On Wednesday night the social was crowded and was a distinct triumph, the amount taken at the doors and raised by selling badges sweets etc., making another large addition to the Fund.
On Saturday, the sports gathering was held and everything went off very well indeed. Mr F. Friendship kindly lent his big bus and a lorrie for the conveyance of the children to the recreation ground and Messrs Greenwell and Porter also lent their motor cars for a similar purp.se. These vehicles were all most tastefully decorated with ferns, flowers and flags, and a motor bike, decorated with chrysanthemums was a sight to see. /.. procession was formed at about 1.30 and, headed by the Huntly band, proceeded to the Recreation Ground, where booths had been erected, and soon the fun was in full swing. The lollie stall was simply rushed and the ladies in charge were kept in a state of perspiration until the whole of the stock had been sold out. Refreshment of all kinds were soon off and the other stalls did well also. The races for the children, the prizes for which had all been given, were well patronised and kept the youngsters engaged for an hour or two.
During the afternoon a football match between the Huntly Rovers and a native team was played and produced a fast and interesting game.
The teams were pretty evenly matched and right up to the call of time, it was anybody’s game. Eventually, the Maoris were proclaimed the victors by 9 points to 7, the score very nearly representing the difference between the teams. The rain, which had. been threatening all day, kept off till the sports were all over and the people well on their way home. The promoters were very fortunate indeed as regards the weather right through the week, for not a day was marred by rain, which is somewhat remarkable at this time of the year. The week was brought to a close by a sacred concert in the King’s Hall on Sunday evening, a considerable sum being taken at the doors.
