It is very doubtful if the average man has really grasped the immensity of the struggle that is now taking place. Nothing like it has ever happened in the world before, and for a comparative basis we are absolutely at a loss. The only thing that may assist us in grasping the tremendous significane of this unheaval, is to compare the annual cost of the wars of the last hundred years with the outgoings of today. The Crimean War cost £100,000,000 a year while it lasted , the American Cival War, £600,000,000; the FrancoGerman War.£600,000,000 ; Rus-so-Turkish War, £200,000,000; The Boar War, £100,000.000; and Russo-Japanese, £200,000, 000. The present war, from August to October, three months, cost £1,000,000,001, so that a year of this sort of fighting will cost more than twice as much as all the wars of the last hundred years put together
