Huntly Relief Fund.

o VISIT FROM MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH. Huntly was honoured this week by a visit from His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch. The object of his visit was to look into certain matters connected with the Huntly Mines Disaster Relief Fund,

It appears that certain people had made allegations that more than enough money had been collected for the Fund, and that there was a prospect of there being a repetition of the trouble -which arose over the Kaitangata and Brunner Funds, in which cases, a large sum of money was left when the Funds were wound up, and of no use to anybody.

The Christchurch Committee in the Lice of several letters received setting forth these allegations thought they would be not justified in handing over the money L unless assured that the money was needed, and that it would be administered in such a way as to ensure its being all used up by the time the last beneficiary had gone off the Fuad. They therefore decided to send the Mayor of Christchurch to investigate the matter on the spot. On arrival, Mr Holland called on the Honorary Secretary, who placed before him all the correspondence and information as to receipt and payment which he desired.

His Worship went very closely into all’ the particulars which concerned him, took notes of the figures and was supplied with a copy of a letter to the Public Trustee which set forth the position of affairs very fully. At the conclusion of the interview Mr Holland expressed himself as being quite satisfied that the allegations were without foundation. He said also that lie would not be a party to recommending the subscribers to hand tbe money over to the Belgian or an other Fnnd, but would endeavour to have the money handed over to the Public Trustee at the earliest possible moment.
