While, as a rule, tlie rainbow trout caught in the Waikato are strong, vigorous and healthy, deterioration is bound to set in unless a vigorous canfpaign is waged'against the gluttonous and voracious shag. At the beginning of the week two “ .slabs, ” as “ slabby ” as Rotorua at its worst could produce, were landed, while an examination of a third showed the presence of worms. The attenuation of the first two, which, unfortunately, were not dissected, no doubt, was attributable to the same cause, and it would be a pity if disease were allowed to continue to affect the trout in the Waikato which promises to be one of the best fishing rivers in the Dominion. Dropped on a lake or river surface the excretion is devoured by the trout in which develop Worms that,.preying upon it. cause it to become thin, sluggish, and lacking in vitality.
