Rawson, S.M., Pre- ' siding. » afyfree miners, charged with having matches in their posses-•'sion-while working down the mine, in pleading guilty to the offence, stated that they were , unaware of the presence of the same in their pockets. The magistrate taking a lenient .✓■'■view as this was the first prosecution of the kind that had come before him fined the culprits five shillings each, with costs seven shillings. For procuring liquor for consumption off licensed premises Ben Waikato was fined £4 and costs, and prohibited in Waikato and Raglan counties for twelve months. Another native for refusing to leave licensed premises when called upon to do so, was mulcted in a fine of one pound and costs. For aiding and abetting another to procure liquor for consumption off licensed premises Henare Nilio Niho was fined 20s and costs. A Rangiriri resident appealed against the issue of the prohibition order desired by his mother who no longer w’shed to proceed. The order was withdrawn, the appellant having to pay 39s for cost of summons, court fees, etc.
