Inquest.
An inquest on the bodies of those recovered from the mine was formally opened on Sunday after--Mioon before Mr E. Rawson, a jury consisting of Messrs. P. Bailey (foreman), F. Arthur, . J. Eccles, E. J. Farrell, E. George and T. Tregowth. The Taupiri Company was represented by Mr C. J. Tunks, while Mr Boyd Bennie, Government Inspector of Mines, appeared for the Department, and Inspector Wright for the police. Messrs. E. W. Alison ~nd H. A. Gordon were also preis directors of the Company, e jury having been empanelled a visit was paid to the King's hall where the bodies were viewed, and on returning to the court, evidence of identification by the friends and relatives of the deceased was given as follows: Patrick Whorskey (miner) identified the body of his brother John. He was a married man, aged thirty-six, and was a deputy and fireman at Ralph's mine. Samuel Jackson, jun., gave 'mdence as to the identity of ather, Samuel Jackson, aged n. -four, a shiftman. Thos Robinson said that the body of Johnson was that of his cousin. Deceased was thirtyseven years of age and married John Hinchco identified the body of his brother, William Hinchco, aged thirty and married. James Edkins identified the body of William Henry Peckliam, aged forty-five, and mar- • ried. He was a deputy and fireman. Herbert Herdson said that the deceased John Clark Skellern, was his brotherr-in-law. Deceased was thirty-eight years of age, and was a deputy and fireman. Thomas identified the bodies of .lliam Burt and Hutchiso .t, aged twenty-six ant -fin . respectively. The •» j a shiftman, and the a trucker. Both were single. William Thompson said that the body of Jacob William Thompson was that of his son, aged eighteen, and single. Robert McEwan identified the body of James Holden, aged fiftyeight years, and married. Levi Allan identified the body of Charles Maloney, aged twentyone years, and married. William Thomas Darby identified the body of Wm, Slavin, eighteen years. He also ’entitled the body of his father, nes Darby, aged fifty-eight' years, a deputy and fireman, married. John Wesley, sen., said that the body of Robert Munsey was that of a single man employed as a miner, aged sixty-seven. Wm. Riggans identified the body of William Kelly, aged thhfy-seven, a contractor, and - ed. ,ames Douglas identified the Dody of Dan Lyons, aged about fifty, and single. He was a machine man. Robert Izatt identified the body of his son, Alexander Izatt. He was eighteen years of age and single. Leslie Steele identified the body of his brother John Steele, aged forty and married. Tames Dooley identified the ly of William Patterson, aged nurty-seven (a widower.) No one could be found to identify David Paterson, a new-comer. The inquest was adjourned till Wednesday, September 23rd, at 11.15 p.m. At the conclusion his Worship expressed his sincere regret at the appalling accident that had occurred in Ralph’s mine, and said that he desired to express 1 is sincere smypathy and condonce with the relatives and ■ends of the deceased miners.
