The proceedings took th v T orm of an auctiaii*sale of it la nth and a rooster, the public offering of which was originally intended for the benefit of the Beautifying Society and was generously diverted by that body, to the cause of patriotism. His Worship the Mayer (Mr J. J. Corry)—who was accompanied by the Mayoress and other ladie- —addressel ,i large crowd that had assembled -around the rotunda, and then assumed the role of knight of the hammer He set the ball rolling right merrily, the bystanders responding readily and enthusiastically. Mr Carry was relieved by three auctioneers —Messrs A. R. Tliomson(Mesars. Griffiths aqd Son), H. Horton (Messrs Carry a-nd Co.), and A. Vickers (Messrs Murray and Co.). The lamb was re-submitted many times, the bids agregating £599 3s The rooster was credited with £67 Is. T'e grand total was thus brought tip to £666 4s. The Mayor smilingly announced that the reserve prices had not been reach ed and that , the lanib and the rooster would he re-offer-ed on another occasion.
