' FARMERS’ UNION. At the monthly meeting of the ; Te Hoe Branch of the N. Z. Farmers’ Union held on the 1 11th inst the following business was done: — A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Evans of Huntly 1 fra lecture on Agricultural ' Chemistry delivered at Te Hoe 1 on 25th ult. Resolution passed by the Opo- ■ tiki Branch and forwarded to ! theTe Hoe Branch as follows: That the Government be asked to authorise a special construc- ' tion loan for the East Coast - Railway, Napier to Auckland, including Pungaroa-Rotorua con--1 nection, so as to enable the whole work to be qompleted in seven years.” "That all sacks 1 should be allowed for by buyers of chaff, maize, etc.”. “ That all ■ fat livestock be sold by weight: 1 * were discussed, and it was resolved to support them. Two new members were elected. A Mutual Help Committee was formed to deal with the requirements of the district during the present crisis, and to keep in touch with the Auckland Ex- ’ ecutive. ■ The following resolution was also passed : “ That we, the Te Hoe Branch qf the N. Z. Farmers’ Union, wish to place on record oin- deep disgust at the unprincipled, 1 npatriotic and un--1 sportsmanlike action of those insatiable capitalists who have taken advantage of the nation’s misfortune to raise the price of foodstuffs, manures, and other necessities of life, thereby to reap a ju’ich harvest at the expense of those who are doing their duty in defending their country and also of those who a few short months ago stood by these capitalists in their hour of ne.ed and helped them out of their trouble at great expense to themselves, and we would urge all branches to co-operate in placing before the Government the urgent necessity of at once assuming some control over the prices of all necessaries of life which in this country could well remain normal seeing that they are practically all produced in the country and that there is no shortage.” Mr R. M. Gatenby, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Liberal League, visited Te Hoe on Wednesday last, 12th inst, and formed a branch of the N. Z. Liberal League. Mr F. W. W. Hubbard was elected chairman and Mr W. D Thompson, secretary. The subscription was fixed at —gentlemen, 2s 6d and ladies, Is. Both bushes. here have been closed down on account of the war and a large number of men are out cf employment.
