Though the Empire seems to Trf be threatened with A ’ a great war whose fell shadow approaches nearer and nearer every day, the prospect,dreaded and abhorred,is being met with a grim determination , to emulate the glorious traditions with which our history teems. The anticipation and reality of conflict have been received with an equanimity, that is remarkable : jingoistic ebullitions of frothy patriotism disappearing before the calm confidence in the issue induced by the belief that the time is opportune for a trial of strength between the forces at the disposal of the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. In the Dominion political difference are quite dormant, and the party led by Sir Joseph Ward has united with that of Mr Massey in order to co-operate in any action necessary to maintain thp integrity i f the Empire and the prestige of the British race. At Home Ulstermen and Nationalists have been at each others throats, their dissensions being apparently incurable without resort to internecine warfare. Before the great imperial danger these differences are as if they had never existed, and both parties have shown an example of loyalty worthy the best traditions of the race. Canada and Australia have recognised their responsibilities, and all the scattered portions of the Empire are unanimous in their determination to help the Mother-land in her time of trouble. More eloquent than words, actions like these send a patriotic thrill through every breast, and nerve Britons of all classes to perform the duties and make the sacrifices which a state of war in-
