Huntly Town Board.

MONTHLY MEETING-. The usual monthly meeting oJ the Huntly Town Board was held 1 on the evening of Thursday, 23rd 1 inst., when there were presen j > Messrs. J. P. Bailey (chairman), ' L. B. Harris Junr., R. Greenwell, ■ and the clerk (Mr F. Harris). The minutes of the previous i meeting as well as the outward i correspondence were read and 1 confirmed. Mr H. Marsland, clerk of the - Raglan Comity Council, wrote to » the effect that the ferry reserve on the east side of the river had '• been legally acquired as a road, one chain wide. He forwarded a tracing of the reserve. The Board agreed that it was satisfactory to know that this approach to the river was public property, and would be conserved for public purposes. The Hon. Minister of Public Works in acknowledging the resolution of the Board objecting to the sides of the subway cutting under the eastern end of the bridge, being left as they were, replied that after full investigation and due consideration of the Town Board’s representations on the matter, it had been finally decided to slope the sides of the cutting and to cover the slopes with a facing of brick which would prevent erosion and the resultant nuisance from windblown pumice dust, which was one of the features of the Boards objection. It was well known that the ground below the cutting was of a very unstable nature, and it was not considered possible to obtain in it secure enough foundations for upright retaining walls on either side of the subway. The Minister was confident that the walls as designed, with the facings of brick, would prove satisfactory, and the dust nuisance would not be aggravated as feared by the Board. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the Board on the 19th. inst. in order to revise the electors’ list, while it was agreed to donate twenty pounds to the School of Mines. In accordance with notice given the chairman moved that a general rate of one penny in the pound be struck on all ratable property within the Town District and that a special rate of twothirds of a penny in the pound be struck in connection with the electric lighting scheme. Seconded by Mr Green well, the motion was unanimously carried’ Accounts amounting to £lO93 8 were passed for payment.
