Huntly School Committee.
The first monthly meeting of the members of the Huntly School Committee was held on Wednesday night when there were present Mesdames Elliot, Harris junr, an ■ Richards, Messrs T. Black, J. Elliot (chairman), G. Shaw and C. Starr. The chairman apologised for the absence of Mr J. Gardner, the secretary. The Auckland Board of Education notified the committee that the sum of £25 14 6d had been lodged to the credit of the school Fund account, as the allowance for the Quarter ended 30th. June last. A circular from the Board stated that the school w >uld be closed for the fortnight beginning Monday, August 3rd, in order that the teachers might attend the classes in physical instruction to be held in Auckland. Ihe committee was of opinion that interference with the school work was to be deplored, and that, while the members were not inimical to the proposed instruction in physical culture, they could not recognise that the ultimate benefits to be derived would more than counter-balance the temporary disadvantages attendant upon aclosed school, to obviate which other means might easily have been devised. Owing to the decreased attendance, the Board Had found it necessaiy to remove Miss C .C. Gibb, surplus assistant, to another school. The Head-master’s report on the staff, as received, was considered satisfactory, the committee being pleased to learn that the recent changes had met with his approval. The certificate for the month of June showed that the roll number stood at 358 with an average attendance of 320.3, the quarterly return giving the roll number and average attendance as 357.7 and 320.7 respectively. Oil the motion of Mr Black, seconded by Mr Starr, the appointment of Mr A. H. Geary as caretaker of the school was confirmed, the specifications for the cleaning of the school, as drawn up by the chairman, being agreed to. Tiie committee was unanimous in its approval of the establishment of the “ Waikato Education District,” as proposed in the new Education Bill, and instructed tlie Chairman to telegraph to the Minister of Education asking that the proposal be carried into effect, and to congratulate him upon the comprehensive and progressive proposals contained in tlie measure now before Parliament, these being in the interests of educational uniformity, efficiency and economy. The motion to such effect was proposed by Mr Black and seconded by Mr Starr. The Head master’s requisition for supplies was granted, the question of suppliers being settled by placing the names of the various business firms handling such goods in the box, the name of the firm first drawn to supply f>r 1914, the second for 1915, and so on, a condition that the prices were similar to those of Auckland stationers to he insisted upon. The Huntly Press Company came out first, the firm of Wilson and Shaw being second.and Green and Colebrook thi-ctL.
