Huntly Town Board

The adjourned monthly meeting of the Huntly Town Board was held on Thursday night when there were present Messrs J. P. Bailey (chairman), L. B. Harris, junr., R. Greenwell, G. T. Horwood, James Elliot and the clerk(MrF. Harris.) The minutes of the previous meeting was read and confirmed. Letters were read from the secretary of the Taupiri Coal Mines acknowledging receipt of deeds of dedication of Hakanoa and Warn Streets, and from the Healtli Inspector as to the regulations governing the sale of food stuffs. The Board received a letter from the secretary of the Taupiri Coal Mines, Limited, regretting that the directors, after having carefully considered the matter of supplying the town at a point with electric power, had decided to abandon the idea. The Railway Department refused to grant another level crossing, while no information had been received from the Public Works Department concern-, ing the retaining wall nec in the fulling ■ n the Main -•.re.!. It was reported that :he lamps at present in use for lighting the streets would not last another six months, while several might be worn out in half that time. The annual cost amounted to something like £3OO, which meant interest and sinking fund on a capital sufficient to instal a complete electrical plant in accordance with the scheme - formerly submitted by Mr Wyllie. The matter of an electrical installation was carefully considered, and Mr Wyllie’s opinion, plans and specifications discussed with the result that it was the unanimous decision of the Board to proceed with the electric lighting scheme, Mr L. B. Harris, junr, seconded by Mr Greenwell, proposing that a poll of the rater ayers be taken on th ■ advisability of borrowing £6OOO for the purp se —a motion that was unanimously carried, the clerk being instructed to make enquiries re raising the money.
