The train ai rangements for the Easter Holidays are advertised in another column of this issue. The household furniture and effects of Mr J. Watt will be sold without reserve at bis residence on Saturday, the auction to commence at IT a.m. The teachers and pupils of the Waikokowai school started work in the new building last Monday. The formal opening will take place after the Easter holidays. A property near Taupiri and another at Pukenui changed owners during the week. The sales of both were successfully negotiated by Mr James Elliot, Land Agent. The following minor accidents i occurred a t the Mines during the j week : —Messrs Thomas Bartle, j ■ sprain of muscles of back ; Don- ; aid Reid, injury to eye; Albert Bethel, scalp wound (Ralph’s) ; Charles Curtis, pick wound in leg; .John Sloe, bruised elbow.; Allen M e Lachlan, sprain * to muscles of back.
Classes in mining and mathematics were started in the Library pn Monday evening under the auspices of the School of Mines. During the coming winter the j congregation of St. Anthony’s Church intend to hold ,-monthly | socials for the coduct of which a committee has been elected. In another column of this issue will be found an advertisement re Mr and Mrs W. Darby’s Quadrille Assembly, which ta :es place in the Masonic Hall on Monday 20th April. The following conundrum propounded at the Lyceum Pictures last week created considerable : amusement : “ Why is the Huntly bridge like an old maid ? ” “ Because it is waiting for the approach ! ” The annual meeting of householders will be held in the District School at 7 o clock on the evening of Monday, 4th May, when the report and balance sheet will be submitted, and a new committee elected. A quantify of potatoes and apples, and a number of turkeys and fowls will be sold by auction at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning oil the vacant ‘ allotments lielween the King’s Hall and the Post Office. We regret that the services of the Band, under Acting-conduc-tor G. Miller, were left unacknowledged in our account of the sports which appeared in last week’s issue. It is to be hoped that the members will take as said all the nice things that ought to have been written. The schools will close for the Easter holidays to-night; the Bank will not be open on Friday of this week, nor Tuesday of next week ; the business places will observe a close holiday on Good Friday and Easter Monday; while the mines will stop from Thursday night until Tuesday morning. The postal arrangements remain as notified last week. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. W. Fraser, is expected to he in Huntly on Good Friday, accompanied by the member for the district. Mr Frqser will inspect the bridge and the railway line, and is expected to go as far as Pukemiro. It is hoped that the Minister's visit will expedite the completion of the bridge, which at present is available for foot traffic only. At the Draughts Tournament j for championship honours, which commences in the Working Men’s Club, Auckland, next Saturday, Huntly will be represented by Mr I). Calderwood. He has put in some capital practice with Mr J. A. Gardiner who broke his journey at Huntly. Last year Mr Gardiner .won the 1 championship at Gore, scoring a fairly easy win over Hillicar, the runner-up, who will also take part in the game at Auckland. A most enthusiastic meeting was held ill the Miners’ Hall for the purpose of forming a Pierrot troupe in Huntly. Mr J. Budge, who voted to the chair, explained at length the object of the meeting, and the good work that could b° done from a social and benevolent point of view. Tiie meeting resulted in the formation of the Huntly Pierrots with a membership of 16. The company will be under the direction of Mr Budge who hopes to place the first programme before the publicin a very short time.
