The Secret of Long Life.
A FAMOUS DimOjAUX. , . EXBERIMENTS WITH PARAFFIN OIL. “ Life ” for March contains a special article of exceptional interest describing the wonderful operations performed by Sir Avbuthnot W. Lane -a famous London surgeon —in sliort-cir-cuiting the intestines as a cure for extreme constipation and diseases due to it. OPERATING FOR MELANCHOLIA. A woman came to Guy’s Hospital in a deplorable state of health, apparently dying. She was tliin, could take no food, and was covered with open sores. She was, moreover, not a cheerful invalid, but was terribly depressed. Several doctors had failed to liagnose her case, but Dr Lane decided that the trouble lay in her intestines. He operated and found that part of her colon (sometimes known as the ox-bow) was in a bad way, so he cut it clean away and joined up (he ends. Within twenty-four hours the patient ceased to be melancholic. In a short while the natural processes began i again, and she improved rapidly. ! Meanwhile, her sores which had ! not been treated at all, healed up, her spirits l ose, and by and by, she departed happy and well. Her case, and others of the same order which followed, became famous. Then Dr Lane set out to find something that would take the poi sonous waste products out of j the intestines without interfering with the natural functions of the body. Most people can realise what such a discovery would mean to countless thousands who suffer from constipation. The article in “ Life ” tells how Dr. Lane made a great yet simple, discovery -namely, that purified paraffin oil, specially refined for internal use, would do what no other oil in the realm of j ! Nature would do -that is, would i | act as a perfect internal lubricant, and remove waste products with- j lout acting as a purgative and ! I weakening the natural digestive i | fluids. After Dr. Lane’s successful ! I experiments physicians imme- j | d iately boga n to prescribe j | purified paraffin (specially pro- S j pared for internal use). | It is now a common thing to treat people of all ages, fr in infants of a few months to old men and women, with purified paraffin. A. leading American magazine has interviewed Sir Arbuthnot Lane on the subject. He states - that he has personally taken mp the regular use of purified paraffin, anrl lie, with hundreds of his friends to whom he recommended it, Have been taking a desertjspoinful n ightly with beneficial i ; results. j It is claimed that “Re 1 Cross ! Paraffin” —the. correct title of the | purest paraffin oil sold here —* : storms alone as the ideal inter- ! mil lubricant. But if only a j small dose bo given, it is absorbed long before it reaches the lower bowel ; and if a large dose lie given, the liver is over worked in trying to digest it. Purified paraffin oil is a pure mineral oil, and* con tains nothing that the body can assimilate, and so makes a perfectly harmless and effective internal lubricant. It is not, of course, synonymous with kerosene—-and is non-in-Hainable. It is the non-volatile product of petroleum—just the opposite to kerosene —and is noninflamahle. It is almost tasteess and odourless, and easy to take. It is neither a drug, a poison, nor a food —nothing but a specially purified lubricant. Dr Lane is quoted as saying : “There is no doubt that if the use of L the paraffin oil were a daily habit 1 health -of the human race would he 'wonderfully improved. It excites no muscle nor stimulates any nerve. It simply lubricates a defective drainage system until ' it becomes effective. Children may take i( as safely as adults. . Most children should take it. Women in particular should take paraffin oil. “ Life” for March is well wotrli buying for this article alone — though there are ma ny other good things in this fine sixpenny Australasian magazine.
