Huntly Town Board

The usual monthly meeting of the Huntly Town Board was held on Thursday evening when there were present Messrs J. P. Bailey (chairman), L. B. Harris, sr., R. Greenwell, G. T. Horw od, J. Elliot, and the clerk, Mr F. Harris. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. With reference to the dedication of Hakanoa and Waru streets, the Secretary of the Taupiri Coal Mines, Limited, stated that as the majority of his directors were out of town, the questions arising therefrom would have to remain in abeyance until their next meeting. The District-Engineer of the Public Works Department informed the Board that the Engineer-in-chief had approved of the suggestion that the lower footpath originally intended be left out and the upper footpaths widened by three feet six inches. The secretaries of the Sports Committee asked the Board to make Saturday, 18th. prox. a general holiday. As this was beyond their power, the Board was unable to comply with the request. The Orakau Monument Committee besought the co-operation of the Board at the unveiling of the monument erected by the Government at Orakau to commemorate the great battle fought there fifty years ago against the natives under Rewi Maniapoto, and asked that the Board appoint a delegate to attend the function which takes place on April Ist next. On the motion of Mr Harris, seconded by Mr Greenwell, the chairman was appointed to act as delegate. Matters relating to the health of the community were referred to the Inspector, while the contract with Mr D. Suttie was duly signed.

The chairman intimated that he had asked Mr Bollard M.P. to use his best endeavours to expedite the completion of the approaches to the bridge with as little delay as possible. The member had promised to do his best, and no doubt his efforts would prove successful. Accounts totalling £142 10s were passed for payment.
