Huntly Police Court.

MONDAY, JANUARY STH. Messrs E. J. Farrell & Lambert J’s.P., Presiding. John Brown, a miner at present on strike, was charged will having assaulted Alfred Lower by striking him on the face witl: his clenched fist. Aceusec pleaded not guilty. Alfred Lowen, a miner who if /unemployed on ac r strike, stated dence that a* standing at th' vay gate abou f .cused came were going t( , eing repea tec tnree nines. On being informee that witness intended to do so accused asked if he were no getting tucker from the union Witness replied that he require! more than tucker as he had hi: rent to pay. Accused then mach certain threats as to what woul< happen if witness had tin temerity to go back to the mines Brown, though excited, wa: sober, and on the face of th threats made, he thought injury might be done if accuse were not bound over to keep tin peace. Brown stated that an argil ment had occurred about goinj work, in course of wliicl 3 : -u his face for ware ,g him out of th ult had occurred The blow could not have bee severe as no mark was visible. Constable Ingram said thatth blow v/as not a severe one, an that when he saw Lowen o Saturday, h.e observed a smal red mark on the left cheek. William Brocklebank corrc berated the evidence of th previous witness, and bore testi mony to the striking of the blov The accused on agreeing no to molest Lowen, and to keep th peace, was convicted, and fine ten shillings with seven shilling costs. Mr Farrell in passin sentence stating that ho wa convinced that the blow wa struck while accused was excited, and expressing the hop that nothing would be done t cause a disturbance ora brea-e of the peace.
