Association Cup.
p PRESENTATION TO WINN ERS. | A pleasant little function took i place in the hotel on Saturday | night when the members of the ; Huntly Association football team | met the representatives of the managing executive who had 1 journeyed from Hamilton for the express purpose of handing over the cup won by the local men in a series of matches that had been engaged in by teams representing Hamilton, ToKuiti, Otorolianga, Te Awamutu and Huntly. The Huntly team, which had seven point - to its credit, was closely followed by the Hamilton team with six. The games played were as a rule, clean and well contested matches, and, though the rivalry was keen, and each club did its utmost to secure the cup. there prevailed the greatest good-fellowship and camaradie that have done a great deal to populous ' ass iciation football in the Waikato. The cup which occupied an honoured place in the centre of j i o’..;' table was greatly admired. 'Hiis handsome example of the j silversmith's art was donated for j Mr H. IT. How len of Hamiiom, without restrictive I conditions, and with the sole obi ‘cl <T prom ling and increasing i te popularity of the soccer game. 1 play* rs and in a fairly large j section of the public, shows that j the aim of the donor has been ! ■ * 1 i ttoros;, lias been shown in the i 1 s ‘ciation game that it. like the j football played under League] i »*ntiiusi.ists have to thank not • , Mr ilowden. but also Mr) ivirkv.v. ,d, nf TeKuiti, who i generously provided medals for - »f the winning team. ! . 1 i ■ said, to present ' i th-- hands.,me cup before them to ’ i the winners « a behalf of the! ■ n r, Mr H. This year the medals were p: -ented by an ardent lover •'ft game, Mr Kirkwood, Te Ar ha. to whom their best ] thanks were due. These medals ! had come to hand, and would be ! ready for p c-t. tat ion as soon i as the names of the winners had j been inscribed upon them. The managing committee had ' ■ av turns as well as for their inacI L’>n, but as only two months had elapsed between the formation of the association and the prei ot th cup, critics should j be just andunbias■sed, andacknowled r - he n c >rd created. Themembersoftlie management commitj iee were imbued with a single j ; dm, ami that was the firm estab- ] 1 is!mient of tho association game • in this district. The members of j that committee were as fair and j impartial as. they c >uld be, and the eason’s tod ball was answer sufficient to critics who grumbled ! imp!.? becau-e they had nothing to grumble about. In playing all their matches in H outitt u the Huntly men had displayed a zeal for the game tiiat had done much to popularise • it, and the sacrifice which so many matches played away from id u - entailed was appreciated 1 by all who were cognisant of it. f Personally, he thought as highly of the spirit shown as 1 he -lid of the success achieved, 1 s' t ’ at i vc i i - v ith pleasure that Mr Howd ip to the can' of Mr Bhilion who, as kipper <d' the team, had led his men to victory. i Mr Shilton expressed his pleasure at .receiving the cup which ilie Huntly team had tried so :• hard to win. He was - glad to 1 see ihe cup in Huntly, and would - toll the members of the managing eommito’o present that the team s which took it away must be prei pared to do strenuous battle, as v H;;itily had determined that the 1 cup had come to the mining town • to stay. He was of opinion that 1 the donation of the cup by Mr s H<iivden, to whorn the thanks of - all lovers of the game were due, e had done a tremendous lot to d stimulate interest in association d football, and hoped that its popu■s larity, instead of diminishing, - would increase by leaps and n bounds. o r JTie cup was then filled will: d champagne, the health of the winners and the donor being toasted again and again.
Before the meeting broke up ! Mr Hunt stated that the fund j raised on behalf of the Hamilton player, whose arm was broken in j one of the matches, had rea u j nearly £25, and the amount d c : been duly handed over to th i i- ’ jured man who asked Hie i speaker to thank the Hu tl/ players for all they had done in the matter. After a discussion on the subject of insuring players against 1 accident, Mr Hunt and his col- ' leagues were very cordially 1 thanked for the visit and for the congratulations and good wishes they had brought with them and 1 voiced so ably. ] ( During the season the local Club : has played 7 matches, of which 1 r (i have been won and 1 drawn, a Goals scored 19 against 4. - " 1 11 i
