While towing a long raft of logs t i which a punt loaded with c >al was attached at tail end, Mr House of Mercer was unfortunate in underestimating the force of the current in the river, which at the present time is considerably increased owing to the flood, and through not allowing enough drift, several of the logs struck against one of the new concrete piers at the west side of the river and broke away, this caused the punt to swerve and to crash into the pier with such force as to crush in the side with the result that she sank in a very few minutes, in about 15 feet of water. The punt and contents a< fir as can be ascertained belong to the Mercer Sawmills Co., and as there is practically no hope of recovery, the loss must be considerable — propably between £•>(> and £6O. Until the present flood water subsides it will be well f,vr launches to keep clear of thT* pier.
