TRAIN EXPERIMENT
FAST ENGLISH MOTOR VEHICLE. LONDON, Dec. 26. The Great Western Railway Company invited journalists and-others to inspect the new streamlined car which will shortly be run between Reading and Slough. The car. is de-._ signed to reduce will'd resistance and effect a saving in running costs. - The car weighs 20 tons, and is 62ft long'and lift 4in high. It is driven by a heavy oil-engine of 130 horse power. The car has seating capacity for 69 passengers, and standing room for another 70. The sides of the car extend to within a foot of the track, and enclose the driving parts. Everything possible have been enclosed, and the effect of the stream-lining, it is stated, has been to-reduce v,;ind resistance to. one-fifth 'of that encountered by a similar square-ended car. The engine, radiator, and driving parts are situated under the floor of the car, and are easily reached for inspection or repair.
Then entrance to the vehicle is in the middle through double doors opening into a vestibule which -leads to two large compartments, each with a central gangway. The seats, which are upholstered in pleated brown leather, and fitted with cellular rubber cushions, should be eomortable for travellers. There are no straps for the convenience, of standing passengers during “rush” hours, but- hand rails are provided which will probably help them to maintain their equilibrium. There are -racks for light articles, and there is room' at one end of the enr for -luggage. The vehicle is lit by electricity and heated by hot water heaters fed from’ the radiator. There is an emergency lever by which the engine can be stopped and the brakes applied. .’ Each compartment is fitted with a clock 1 and. speedometer, and the.’ internal equipment (also Includes a microphone and loud-speakers, which will enable the guard to communicate with the driver or the passengers. The system of power transmission and the brakes and controls are duplicated, so that the vehicle can be driven from either end.
Tlie car has been designed for a maximum speed of 60 miles an hour.
