On Saturday after showers after midday, the weather held up and the afternoon and evening were' fine. There was a large crowd in town and the streets wore a very busy aspect, the business people reporting a good turnover for the period. About 10 p.m. a sudden sharp shower fell which assisted to drive many home. The night was a very showery one, and? Sunday was also very boisterous. Christmas Day was fine, with a heavy wind while the weather was also fine yesterday for Boxing Day.

The Princess Theatre .was crowded to the doors last evening long before 8 o’clock, large numbers being turned away, when Everybodys Pictures presented “Cavalcade,” one of the pictures of the year, which proved fully up. to expectations and report. The picture will be .presented' again to-night, but owing to other engagements made in .the north for its presentation it will not be' shown on Thursday as was previously announced.

The golden wedding was celebrated at Greymouth on Monday of Mr and Mrs Debenham, who are both natives of Hokitika, and are still hale and hearty at 73 and 71 years respectively, They were married at the Holy Trinity Church', Kumara, by the Rev. John Holland, on Christmas Day, 1883, and have been residents of Greymouth for over forty-eight years. Mrs Debenham is the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Lochore, Hokitika, and Mr Debenham is the second son or the late Mr and Mrs H. Debenham, also of Hokitika. All Mr and Mrs Dsbenham’s children married, and are: —Mr s H J. Maisey (Wellington), Mr s C. Wood (Greymouth), Mrs C. Lew (Christchurch), Mrs C. Vial (Ashburton) and Mr W. Debenham (Wellington). Mrs Debenham has three sisters, residing in Wellington and Wripukurau, -whilst Mr Debenham has one brother /Mr H. Debenham), a resident of Cobden. The couple were the recipients of many expressions cf good wishes.

t The Municipal Band played the usual carols in Hokitika during Christmas morning. For many years the custom has been to commence at midnight, but this year/it was decided to stait at b a.m The Band was divided into two sections, one half, under the conductor (Mr Boss), and the other under the ' bandmaster (Mr Richards).' Owing to s the generosity 0 f Mr A. E. Stephens 3 who offered the band his two lorries, 5 the work of visiting the various parts r of the town was expedited. As in pre--1 vious years, the band was entertained 5 during, its course, at the home of Mr i Robert Ross, senr., Mr Richarjs thank--5 ing the Ross family for their many r kindnesses to the band. At the ccnclus- } ion of the town programme, the band joined forces at the Westland Hospital where they played the full programme and were thanked by Matron Anderson" _ on behalf of the patients and strff. v The Old People’s Home was then visit- . ed, thence to Hr. Childs’, who enter- , tained the bandsmen and took . the opportunity to express his | thanks to the band for their many visits to the Mental Hospital during the winter months, and supplying the music for the dances, and their thoughtfulness in visiting the institution to play the carol programme. The band divided again and visited the numerous wards, Matron Needs expressing her thanks on behalf of the patients and st,eff. If arrangements can he made a programme of .music will he played in Revell Street on Saturday; | evening.
