The death of Mr David Morrison, a well-known resident of Greymouth, occurred at 7 o’clock last evening at tlie Grey River Hospital, after an illness lasting for a lengthy period. Albert Brennan, aged six years, of Blake Street, Blaketown, and Olive Conza, aged four years, of Preston Road, were admitted to the Grey Hospital yesterday afternoon, suffering from fairly severe injuries, sustained when they were run over by a motor lorry driven by a. boy named Loloya. Hales, in Swift Street. It appears that, the children were playing with others, at the edge, of the lagoon, when they apparently were frightened by the lorry, and ran across the road, each being hit by one side of the vehicle. After attention by. Dr Bird, they were admitted to the Hospital, but the extent of their injuries will not .he ascertained until after an X-ray operation to-day.

Children attending the primary schools began on Wednesday one of the longest vacations they have had f°f years. Usually they 'have a vacation of six weeks at Christma s and New Year, but their present holiday from lessons will be only one day short of seven weeks, the schools resuming on. Tuesday, February 6. The Canterbury Education Board has decided that after each vacation the school will resume on a Tuesday instead of a Monday in future, with the result that the first &rm and the second term holidays will consist of a fortnight and one day. Next year when the schools break up for th e Christmas and New Year vacation thepupils and teachers will have a. break of six weeks and three days.

According to a statement presented to the House of Representatives, the annual salary of the Chief Justice is £2300, and of each of the other judges £2OOO. Only one judge ha s had an increase in salary, and he is Mr Justice Herdman, whose salary was raised by £2OO in April, 1920. For the year ending March 31, 1933, the Chief Justice received £l2O in travelling expenses and £9O in travelling allowance; Mr Justice Herdman £122 and £153, Mr Justice Reed £l7O and £l7B.
