TWO MEN.CAUGHT AFTER CHASE

AUCKLAND, December 19

Two shots were fired last night by a bowser proprietor at Henderson, •named Andrew ,Sink'ovich j . when ■ pursuing a man who nr he suspected of attempting theft. Sinkovich, whose house is about 200 yards from the bowser, was telephoned by a neighbour at 1.30 o’clock thi s morning. She said she could .see nienvabout the pumps. He woke his son and got hi s shotgun and then switched on the lights, illuminating the pumps. Two men were immediately revealed and they decamped, Sinkovich chasing one. He fired two shots and eventually the man stopped. The neighbour called a policeman who arrested the man, and they then found a third man hiding in a nearby •hedge. The, second man, who was chased by the, son, escaped and though the search continued till early this morning, he was nof found. The policeman however found a motor truck about 100 yards up the road.

In- the police court' tw,e suspects, Bert Roland Sergeant, 23 years of age, a motor driver, and Alphonso Raymond Sergeant, aged 20; a labourer, were , charged' with attempted theft of petrol, and were remanded/ ;
