CHRISTCHURCH, December 18,

By eight votes, to seven, the Christchurch City Council decided this evening net to rescind its previous resolution refusing to allow picture theatres to be opened on Xmas Day. Dr Thacker moved a motion to rescind the resolution. The motion was defeated. Dr Thacker than moved that pictures be allowed on Christmas night. An objection was raised that notice of motion was necessary, but the deputy-Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, accepted a motion that the standing orders be suspended to allow of ' further' discussion. This motion was lost oy eight votes to seven. At the end of the meeting, Dr Thacker gave notice of motion to call n special meeting of the Council on Friday, to discuss the question again.
