MAKO SHARKS

TWO CAUGHT IN CULF

AUCKLAND, December 11

Promise of an early big-game fishing season is given by the success of Mr Harold. Baxter, of Auckland, who, fishing from his launch Tinker, caught two seven-foot mako sharks in the Hauraki Gulf. Taking with him a fisherman who had reported difficult fishing conditions due to. sharks, Mr Baxter saw large shoals -of school-fish about 10 miles from in,, the direction of Cape Colville.

Using standard swordfish tackle the first shark was hooked almost immediately and after a good fight lasting over an hour was landed. Shortly afterwards another fish struck and this also took over an hour to land. Both sharks appeared to be over 5(l01b. in weight. Fishermen report an early abundance of school-fish and of sharks in these particular waters. On one linpuku ground considerable, trouble has been caused by a large tiger shark, and Mr Baxter had the'. experience of having his line taken above the trace, which suggests the method of that particular species. •
