WEHEKA “SLY GROG” CHARGE
SEQUEL TO SEARCH BY POLICE
Arising out of a police search at Weheka early this month, a Weheka resident, Edwai’d John Hayes, appeared 'in tiie Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with : selling liquor without a license, and with exposing liquo r for sale. He-was represented by Mr js.. (Murdoch who entered pleas of not guilty. Constable O’Halloran, of Christchurch, said that on December 2, he went to Hayes’' home with, another man. There were nine others there, and drinks were
oil the table. Later in the night glasses were filled, one man saying at, was hi s ‘‘shout.” Witness also “shouted,” and j bought a bottle of I beer. The bai’rel was ill the kitchen, the room where the drink' was served being a temporary construction. Altogether he. saw four “shouts” beside his own, between 10.45 p.m. and 2 a.m. approximately. prior to this visit he had noticed men going to the house in the evening. This house was referred to as the ‘‘top pub,” Hackell’s being khown ,as the “bottom pub.” •Mr Murdoch:.. Did you tell the people . your name was McKeegan ? Yes.;
